Medicare Advantage Plan
What is a Medicare Advantage Plan / Medicare Part C?
Advantage Plans (sometimes called Medicare Part C) are health insurance HMO plans or
sometimes PPO plans designed to serve as replacements or substitutes for “Original
Medicare” Parts A & B Benefits.
Your “Original Medicare” Parts A & B are billed through
the federal “Centers for Medicare and Medicaid” (CMS).
Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by commercial insurance companies. The insurance company receives compensation from the federal government for taking on the responsibility of filing and paying claims internally. Therefore they do not file claims
through CMS for service providers.
By assigning your Medicare A&B to an Advantage plan you lower the copayments and deductibles of Original Medicare and sometimes add limited dental and vision coverage.
Since you will have an HMO or PPO health plan managing your Medicare benefits, they will limit you to the doctors, hospitals
and other providers that you are able to see. In some cases, these plans add monthly premiums to your
Medicare cost in addition to the premium you are already paying for Medicare’s Part B -- and you will still have copays and deductibles. This type of plan will sometimes have a Part D prescription plan built in
and will not allow you to apply for a separate Part D plan.
