Medigap/Medicare Supplement Plan Information

Under the Medicare program, thousands of senior citizens, disabled Americans and others with chronic illnesses receive vital health insurance benefits. But even though the Medicare program can greatly reduce a policyholder’s out-of-pocket burden for their care, plans will not eliminate the costs that the recipient might have to pay.

For additional help paying for some of the outstanding costs of your care, you might be able to use a Medicare supplement plan, also known as a Medigap plan. Qualifying Medicare patients can benefit from the additional help Medigap plans provide.

For assistance getting the Medigap plan that is right for you, all you have to do is call Conley & Conley Insurance at 888.802.0003 or request your free quote now!

Understanding Medigap Plans

If you are an Original Medicare patient, you can use your benefits to receive critical medical care from inpatient care to routine physician services. Your Medicare will pay a certain amount of money for the costs of the care you receive, and then you often owe a portion of the care costs yourself.

To some people, particularly those with a lot of health care needs, the cost sharing requirements set by the Medicare program can seem like a high financial burden. For assistance paying these costs, you might be able to use the benefits provided by a Medigap plan.

Though there are many Medigap plans, each can help the policyholder with certain costs such as:

  • Deductibles
  • Coinsurance cost sharing
  • Copayments

For an affordable monthly premium, you can reduce many of these costs, and therefore create more stability for your overall budget and care plan.

Please Note: Medigap plans do not pay for prescription drugs, dental, vision or private nursing care.

Common Medigap Plan Questions

How Many Medigap Plans Are There?

In most states, there are 10 types of Medigap plans available. Each has a corresponding label: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N. Depending on the plan you select, the benefits will vary.

Once you have the plan of your choice, your Original Medicare will pay up to it limits, and your Medigap plan will then pay its share of your costs. You still might owe a portion of your care costs even after the Medigap policy pays, though this will be substantially less.

How Much Do Medigap Plans Cost?

Medigap plan costs vary based on the type of plan you select and the company that you buy your coverage from. Other factors might also influence your rates.

Your Medigap agent can work with you to determine the appropriate course of action to find an affordable benefits package that offers you optimized coverage.

When Can I Apply For Medigap Plans?

The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is during your Medigap open enrollment period. This is a six-month period that starts the first day of the month you are 65 years old (or older) and enrolled in Part B coverage. For example, if you are 65 and your Medicare starts in March, then your Medigap enrollment period starts on March 1 and runs from March 1 – Aug. 31.

If you want to change your Medigap plan or drop your coverage after open enrollment, then you might not qualify for certain plans and other penalties might apply.

Please note: If you have a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan, then you do not qualify for Medigap coverage. Only recipients of Original Medicare (Part A & Part B) can qualify. Further restrictions might exist for individuals under the age of 65, with disabilities or with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
